GOT THE TEE-SHIRT?
HOSANNA!

I know there were no tee-shirts to be sold in Jesus’ day, never mind tee-shirts with slogans on them but, in these days when tee-shirts often shout slogans loud, if not clear, I can’t help wondering what such slogans might have been in those last days of Jesus’ life when He came to the city of Jerusalem. There must have been vendors around trying to sell tourist-type trinkets to the crowds as they flocked into the capital city.
Some of the crowd had been there often, especially those who did not live too far away and who could faithfully follow the instruction in scripture to attend the Temple for worship on 3 special occasions each year. Some were not so regular but had also been there before, but others were there for the first time, eagerly taking in the sights and sounds and wanting to find some souvenir to take back home to prove to friends and neighbours that they had indeed worshipped in the Temple. A tee-shirt with some significant slogan on it would have been just right. It would have proclaimed ‘Been there! Done it! Got the tee-shirt!’ for months, if not years, ahead.
And it could have been even more special and significant and become a treasured possession for many, whether they were first-timers or not. Those taking the road up to Jerusalem on this day could hardly believe their luck for, in amongst the crowd, journeying with them, was someone who made the day just that bit more special.
Some were excitedly telling of how they had seen this man restore the sight of blind Bartimaeus only days before in Jericho. Some were declaring that this man from the north was the new Prophet of God, successor to John the Baptist. Some went even further and were saying that he must be the Anointed One of God, God’s promised Messiah. Whoever he was, the word on everyone’s lips was ‘Hosanna!’
Now that would have been a slogan to sell tee-shirts by the thousand, not just to those visiting the city for the Passover celebrations but to every full-blooded Jew who wanted to see the end of Roman rule in their land and a return to independence. After all, ‘Hosanna’ was a prayer to God asking Him to ‘Save now!’
Perhaps the sight of tee-shirts like this would encourage this man, Jesus, riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, to do something special. No wonder there were some who spread their cloaks on the road before him and waved palm branches in the air
and chanted as he passed by, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ (Mark 11.9).
HOSANNA!’ it had to be if you wanted a tee-shirt to remember this occasion, the day destined to be known down the centuries as Palm Sunday, when you had been there in the crowd. But there were some waiting in Jerusalem who were preparing to challenge this declaration.
