You can’t miss it!
It is still easy to miss the unmissable
Have you noticed that, if you ask someone for directions, they often finish by saying, ‘You can’t miss it!’ but you often do, perhaps because you don’t really know what you are looking for. It is indeed surprising how often the unmissable is actually missed. Maybe that is why TV channels regularly give reminders that they have ‘catch up’ services for viewers who have missed vital episodes of favourite programmes.
It is not necessary to say ‘You can’t miss it’ about Christmas. It is recognised, and celebrated, in countries all around the world - including countries where Christianity is frowned on or where there are few Christians, and by people who rarely go to church or are eager to dispense with BC and AD in favour of BCE and CE (though the dividing point is exactly the same).
But the first Christmas, when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, was missed by the very people who had been given the instructions about it, the Jews. Only a handful of shepherds and a few foreigners didn’t miss it.
The season of Advent is about ensuring that we don’t miss the unmissable. It is a time of preparation for the celebration of the coming of the Son of God in human form, the Incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ who would become our Saviour.
You can’t miss Christmas. At least, it would be very difficult to do so with all the commercial hype. But you can miss its significance and meaning. However, the directions are all there in John 1.1-14 and Luke 2.8-20. You can’t miss it!
