World Cup Fever Increases!
World Cup Football – how’s your team doing?
It’s nail-biting time as we head for the knock-out stage of the World Cup. There will be anxious moments leading up to the 30th to see who will qualify and who will be the likely opponents, and at every game from then on.
Hopes will have been raised and dashed in the opening rounds as teams got used to new pitches and venues and faced opponents they have never met before and know little about. Success in the World Cup often depends on how players adapt to such things.
One little slip by one player, even the best, can end the hopes of a nation and bring despair to millions. One unseen illegal use of the hand or one failure by a referee to make the right decision will spell disaster for some teams.
It can be argued that it is only a game, but it is all so important in the life of many who are committed to the support of their team. So how is your team doing? Hopefully it is still in with a chance of reaching the final on July 15th.
If one little slip by a defender or one chance to score missed by a forward can have such major consequences, what about the errors we make and the chances we miss which have serious consequences for others. For that defender or that forward, there may not come another opportunity to atone for their mistake and retrieve the situation. So they may have regrets for the rest of their lives, even though their colleagues might forgive them.
With us, there is always the chance to say ‘Sorry’ and often there is something we can do to make up for what we have done wrong. To do that, or even simply saying ‘Sorry’, may take as much courage as taking on the challenge of marking Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi or Kevin de Bruyne, or being the centre forward for England when the team is performing indifferently and few worthwhile chances of scoring are being made.
A lot us dream of having the chance to play for our national football team and would give our all to atone for any mistake we might make if we were playing. So why not put things right in those other areas of our life which are not part of our fantasy world so we don’t have to live with our regrets.
How’s your team doing? I’m sure there will be lots of ‘Sorry’ being said as mistakes are made, and expressions of forgiveness, too, to give support and encouragement.
If we can also say ‘Sorry’ when we make mistakes, and forgive others for the times their mistakes and failings hurt us, then we are doing what Jesus did when He prayed to God as He was being nailed to the cross, ‘Father, forgive them...’ (Luke 23.34).
It was through His crucifixion, Christ’s great ‘Sorry’ on our behalf, that God forgives us those things that we do, or don’t do, which hurt Him because they hurt others.
