One More Step

Life is sometimes described as a journey and there are many journeys, of different kinds, in every life. Many new ‘journeys’ start at this time of year as children start school – a new journey for the parents as well as the children – or move to another school or class. Older scholars move on to higher education or out into the world of work, hopefully, if they have completed their studies.
For such people, the challenge of making a start on these new ‘journeys’ may be daunting, for many people don’t like moving out of their comfort zone. For others, it is an exciting time because of the prospects and opportunities that can be seen.
Even if you are not at a point where new horizons beckon, the journey of life goes on and, daily, it is a case of one more step to be taken along the road, whichever road we are walking. Those steps may be heavy and difficult or light and easy depending on circumstances. Whatever they are, they are easier, and the road seems shorter, when you have a good friend as a travelling companion.
The best friend and most faithful travelling companion on the road of life is the Lord Jesus Christ. He has promised those who believe in Him as the Son of God and their Saviour that He ‘will be with you always’ (Matt.28.20). He can guide us through the potholes and pitfalls, the difficulties and dangers, as each day we take one more step.
Some words from Sydney Carter’s song ‘One more step among the world I go’ may be helpful to all who are starting new journeys in life, making choices about which way to go or struggling with the journey they are on. They form a simple prayer to the One who listens to and loves each one of us :
As I travel through the bad and good,
Keep me travelling the way I should…
Give me courage when the world is rough,
Keep me loving when the world is tough…
And keep me travelling along with You.
It only takes one step to get started on a journey, one more step to continue it, and we shall find the ultimate fulfilment of life’s journey if we follow Jesus each step of the way.
And a prayer for those whose journeying in life may be along roads which are rough and steep :
Almighty and loving God,
when the way before us is unclear, lead us gently by Your word;
when the way before us is rocky, support us with Your gentle hands;
when the way before us is hard and long, strengthen us with Your Spirit;
when the way before brings pain and grief, carry us in Your arms;
when the way before makes us afraid, grant us courage and peace;
and in all our ways walk with us and bring us safely home.
