THAT'S TOO MUCH TO ASK!
The promise he was asking them to make involved 4 things:
When Francis Clark, a young minister at the Congregational Church in Williston, Portland, Maine, had the idea for a meeting for young people in his church, he thought it ought to challenge them. So he included in the structure of the meeting a promise
As this was in February 1881, he referred to it in Biblical terms as a Covenant rather than a promise as he wanted the young people to be aware that the promise they made was to God and not to him as the minister or to the church.
When he showed the Covenant to his wife, her reaction was ‘That’s too much to ask!’ because she thought that none of the young people would agree to it. So what was he asking?
The promise he was asking them to make involved 4 things:
1. To try to live as a Christian should
2. To speak to God daily through prayer
3. To read God’s Word daily in the Bible
4. To join in the fellowship of God’s people and support the Church and its services.
In one sense, to promise to do those things consistently is indeed a challenge. But, for the Christian, they should not be a challenge but part of the normal way of living, as we trust God to give us strength to live in His way.
When we realise how great is the love of God for each one of us, shown through the life and death of Jesus Christ His Son, and the power of His presence through the Holy Spirit to help and to guide us, then these promises are not too much to ask. They are basic principles for the Christian life and have made the movement which Francis Clark founded, Christian Endeavour, a world-wide movement influential in training young people for the service of Christ and the Church
The young people at that church in Williston responded gladly to the covenant presented to them by their minister. Christian Endeavour is now a world-wide organisation so, for many people round the world, February 2nd is recognised as Endeavour Day, and they are glad that they have risen to the challenge of the CE Covenant.
How far can you go with the challenge of these promises? Or is that too much to ask?
