Election Day
Will any party win enough seats in Parliament to get Brexit through, or get it reversed, or will it be another ‘hung’ Parliament? Nobody knows! It’s anyone’s guess! So your vote counts at this election where not even political pundits want to take a chance on predicting the outcome.
The only thing that’s certain is that most people are fed up with the present situation in Parliament. Though some people say that the Parliamentary system is working as it has prevented the Government from pushing through a deal with the EU which was less than perfect, others are of the opinion that Parliament is frustrating the will of the people expressed in the referendum three years ago. One effect of the confusion in the House of Commons is that Parliamentary language and actions have become more toxic and frenetic which, in turn, has generated vitriolic and menacing e-mails to Members of Parliament.
Will it all change by the middle of December? Or will it still be deadlock rather than decision in Parliament, pandemonium rather than progress, mayhem not movement on the major issue of Brexit? Will Parliament be stuck with another year, or more, of Brexit discussion and dithering or will it be able to get on with other urgent business necessary for the nation’s welfare? Your vote could help to decide what happens on December 12th in what has been called the most important election in a generation.
Elijah had a question for the Israelites when he gathered them together with the prophets of Baal for a showdown on Mount Carmel. ‘How long will you waver between two opinions?’ he asked (1 Kings 18.21[NIV]). The world might very well be asking the same question of Britain today, ‘How much longer will it take you to make up your mind?’ [GNB].
Elijah’s question was not, of course, about Brexit, but about another important issue where the people, the Israelites, were ‘sitting on the fence’. He gives the alternatives. ‘If the LORD is God, worship Him, but if Baal be God, worship him’ That’s also a choice we face.
